Brilliant course with Richard Sweeney. Exceptionally talented, generous and patient, he passed on the foundations of his craft and made it really fun. West Dean is wonderful as ever (my fourth visit) marvellous gardens, accommodation, staff and food. The whole experience is always so restful and cathartic.

I recently attended “ Blacksmithing and metalworking – an introduction (Tutor: Andrew Smith)”.

I had a fantastic time, the tutor Andrew Smith is excellent. He’s a renowned artist in metal, he’s a wise, patient and humorous tutor. Top experience. A fantastic setting, great food, fellow students. I work in tech, made a poker and candle stick - really surprised myself. Fun!

This is my third visit to West Dean College for a residential short course (Life Painting in Oils for Beginners). This was led by Zara Drummond, who generously and expertly guided all seven of us - all complete novices - to three finished paintings each, with confidence and competence. I have always enjoyed my stay here - on full board basis, with a cooked meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus unlimited hot drinks and biscuits. This time my room was in the West Wing, on the top floor: a small ensuite with a double bed. The view was the best thing - it looked out onto the grounds towards the stream. During my stay the view of the beautiful frost-tinged lawns and bright, sunny skies each morning was very pleasing and set my day up nicely. The only problems I had encountered with the room were that it did not feel as cosy as it could be - the heating was not adequate. My two previous stays were much more cosy and warm. Also ladybirds - alive and otherwise - were discovered living on the window. However, I will definitely be booking another course here soon, such a gem of a place. It allows you to forget all about the outside world for a few days and concentrate on making beautiful art.

Everywhere has pros and cons, right ? |Pros: Beautiful setting, grand house, some impressive art works, beautiful gardens, friendly reception staff, large, quiet room.|Cons: a little overpriced I think although costs must be high in that house and gardens; cold in the bedroom in the main house although staff quickly rectified this when I mentioned this; and finally, although the organisation markets itself as sustainable, its staff seem to have no idea what vegan food is. I was offered cheesy pasta and fried eggs at two different meals as the vegan option. On another occasion, I was told there'd be a 5-10 minute wait for the vegan meal and on another occasion it was so bland it was depressing. As the meat and dairy industry is responsible for more greenhouse gases than all forms of transport combined, i really don't think you can call yourself 'sustainable' with such a poor grasp of a) what vegan food is and b) the ability to produce it at anything close to the standard of the other food.

I have just returned from a short course on Mosaics with Helen Miles. What a lovely experience. Lots of excellent teaching, encouragement, hands on experience and support provided. It is a lovely place to go to learn about Mosaics. Helen Miles is a joy.

I enjoyed the course very much and Caroline was an excellent tutor, very knowledgeable on her subject.
I stayed at the college - the rooms were very comfortable and the food excellent. Everything was supplied for the course but the shop is also available if needed.
The house stands in beautiful grounds and parking is available.
One tip would be to take a hairdryer as there wasn't one in my room.
I can thoroughly recommend the college and accommodation.

I've just been on a 3 day mixed media course at West Dene. The setting is stunning and the main building is a beautiful historic building. Everything has been tastefully decorated and the atmosphere is comfortable, stylish, modern but sensitive to the history of the building.
The facilities are very good and there is a friendly atmosphere amongst the participants.
I was non-residential so I can't comment on the overnight facilities.
