Having visited Oxford many times in the past 40 years or so for both business and pleasure, I've experienced a wide range of accommodation in the city. However, this was my first time at St Hugh's College.||||I was coming to Oxford specifically to attend a weekend conference held at Hertford College in the centre of town. Initially, I had planned to spend most of my UK trip in London, and only booked St Hugh's for a short two-night stay. However, a couple of months before my trip, I decided to shorten my time in London and instead spend more time in Oxford, and I was able to extend my booking at St Hugh's to five nights without any difficulty whatever.||||I couldn't have been more delighted with my choice and with the overall experience of staying at St Hugh's. While this college, founded in 1886, lacks the traditional medieval architecture of the much older and more famous city centre Oxford colleges, it more than makes up for that with a quiet, tranquil, attractive, and very comfortable setting. My single room in modern Maplethorpe Building was simple but clean and uncluttered, and the large window offered a delightful view. The staff members I encountered were welcoming and helpful but unobtrusive; the generous full English breakfast was a treat; and the absolutely beautiful and tranquil college grounds were a wonderful bonus.||||A few minor problems were easily overcome. The first time I usef the shower, a great deal of water splashed all over the bathroom floor because the shower curtain didn't reach the bottom. I mentioned this problem to my "scout" (i.e, the housekeeper) as I was going out for the day, and when I returned, I found that she had been able to adjust the curtain to the necessary length so that this situation didn't recur. It also took me a couple of days to figure out how to turn down the heat supplied via a radiator in the room; but again, this was hardly a problem of major proportions. Nor did I mind the fact that St Hugh's is on the residential outskirts north of town; indeed, I enjoyed my daily stroll into the center of Oxford and/or to the railway station.||||In short, during my five-night stay, I felt completely at home at St Hugh's. If one wants a luxury, five-star experience, there are plenty of upscale hotels in Oxford that will offer that for a price. However, St Hugh's was ideal for my purposes and my budget, and I would gladly stay there again when I am next in Oxford.

The room was very small and basic. It is said 24 h porter service but when we arrived at night, the person stayed at main gate and gave very unclear instruction to where to go (it is in other building and had to go through a gate hides behind a path). We had to phone twice to finally be able to find the rooms. The breakfast was very basic. The people behind the counter watched as we took the food from the trays. It was a experience but not worth the money!

Many years ago I was involved in setting up a management conference at Balliol College, Oxford. One of the delegates (from a multi-national company) complained vociferously about the accomodation in this fine historic venue. Times change, and university accomodation has improved. But the fact remains that this is a college for students, not a hotel. Our room (a bit hard to find: my fault) had plenty of space, a comfortable bed and a good en-suite. It was fairly plain and had no radio or television.||||The buildings and gardens are attractive and the check-in staff efficient and helpful. The cafeteria breakfast was very "studenty" (nostalgic!).||||Two orther points: as an Oxford alumnus I received an upgrading on our room at a very good price. Secondly, St Hugh's is quite a way from the city centre, but there are plenty of busses (pity I forgot my bus pass).

I’ve stayed at St Hugh’s college four times each for a week in length while studying. It is quite affordable and good value given the breakfast included. Drawbacks would be most rooms share bathrooms and the college is further from town than other alternatives. That said the bathrooms are lined up along the corridors next to the bed rooms so you feel like you have your own bathroom anyway. The distance from town is a lovely 15 min walk or short bus or taxi ride. Given the rooms are comfortable with tea/coffee, water and biscuits replenished daily, the delicious full English breakfast included in the rate and the friendly porters at the gate it is very good value. Better than all other hotel options I’ve tried so far in Oxford. Highly recommended!

Who should not stay here - people who need a fancy hotel with fine restaurant in the lobby, great service, a city at their fingertips|| ||Who should stay here - everyone else||||It is just awesome. It's a dorm, a lot like dorms in the US, a place to sleep. The bus runs by about a block away. Take it to town (or walk, very easy) or to Blenheim Palace, maybe 20 minutes) or to connect to other cities. The food is fine. ||||Oxford is ancient, historic, scholarly, fun, full of smart young adults. Don't miss it.

Not as per the description online. Dingy room, unclean tea tray and dirty unwashed cup, dirty tea stains left from previous occupant on bedside table, gloomy room lighting, gloomy en-suite shower room with nowhere, not even a tiny shower tidy, to hold a few toiletries, making it very awkward. No hair dryer in room (in other colleges I’ve stayed this is standard), no laundry room to press clothes, and no iron available from the Porter’s lodge to use in one’s own room, as the two they have were in use. I feel that for a college with dozens and dozens of rooms two irons just seem insufficient. No idea they said when they’d be returned which isn’t helpful for other guests waiting to use! Rather than being treated like paying guests it’s as if we’re just their everyday students... very noisy room - from the side wall of the room where the bed is located, there’s a high window and what seems must be a stair well as doors banging and people talking loudly can be heard very clearly as if they’re right INSIDE my room, something I just do not think is acceptable. Then from the front of the room the window looks onto a main road with noisy traffic. It’s completely misleading when booking this place - the impression from the website is of a tranquil Oxford college in pretty gardens / grounds. No, it isn’t at all tranquil it’s very noisy. Loud talking and shouting everywhere - term time is over, hence be rooms are available for the public to stay, so why are there so many constant doors banging and shouting/ cheering at night? It’s very annoying. I’ll never stay again and cannot recommend this place. What a contrast with the lovely colleges I’ve stayed at in Cambridge - peaceful havens and all the amenities one could want as a paying guest and actually about the same price as this one. I hope other Oxford colleges aren’t as poor value or as poorly run as St Hugh’s. 🙁
