The courses are fine, but the cleanness of the campus is terrible. Over a half of ladies toilets are always not flushed and smell disgusting. They should teach students how to use the toilet first and improve cleaning to provide the confortable learning environment.

College is very nice. The building is big and have all the facilities for studying. Computers available in every floor, comfortable sofas and big round tables. Fantastic views from top floors.

They cancelled my IELTS test appointment 5 days before the test without any explanation. When I enquired, I was told it was due to "unforeseen circumstances".

I really can’t explain what the experience at Southwark College has done to my moral. I’ve never experienced an educational institute like it.

I had wanted to apply for a degree course but lacked the grades needed in maths. I initially enrolled at a college closer to where I live and I can honestly say I was so excited. The teachers were really invested into our learning and really encouraged us.

After our first class this particular college took the initiative to separate us into the appropriate levels so each class had students at the same level of learning. We moved so quickly and learnt so much in the first three weeks. I was so excited.

Unfortunately I couldn’t get to the classes on time as I worked in the city. I had to make the tough decision of looking for another college in the city. I came across Southwark College online and sent the application. After speaking to the head of the maths department it seemed promising.

Because I was born in this country and worked I was hit with the unexpected expense of paying £75 for the first term something I didn’t understand as the previous college did not charge me anything. It was an unpleasant surprise but I really wanted to take the course so I paid it.

The first lesson the teacher was sick which I wasn’t made aware of so two other students and myself came in, sat in the class room and essentially tried to teach ourselves. The second week there were train strikes so class was cancelled. The third week was the first actual lesson we had and then the fourth week was half term.

In the first four weeks we only had one lesson. I started to get anxiety because I had come from an excellent college to join a college that obviously couldn’t careless about the future of its adult students even those who had paid for it.

After half term you guessed it the first lesson back was cancelled. At this point I knew I made a huge mistake coming to Southwark College but by this time it was too late to return to my previous college. I was soul destroyed.

I forged on with pupils in the class at ALL different levels. Some of which returned to the course year after year sometimes 4 years straight never progressing and leaving with a pass grade.

I just knew it wasn’t going to be a good outcome but I thought at least I’ll know what level I’m at when I have to redo another year somewhere else.

I can’t explain how unorganised, how utterly messy, discouraging and disrespectful this whole experience was. Of course once a few pupils saw they weren’t going to get anywhere on this course they left. The way we as adult students were treated on this course was as if we didn’t really matter for example non of us were made aware that we had access to resources and funds for printing until two weeks before the exams and we were told by another student not even a member of staff.

I don’t underestimate that some people may have had better experiences at this college but from my experience I would advise to avoid this college at all cost (because it will cost you your money, time and moral). They don’t care about or respect adult learners and you will be better off researching and finding an institution that actually wants to help you and respects that you want to better yourself and your future.
