The courses are truly useful, informative, and inspiring. I have started learning English since six years old, but only through the courses did I find out the various mistakes I made in my daily life. The well-designed courses cover nearly all aspects of the work of an international lawyer, such as contract, company law, legal writing, etc. It is a golden opportunity for a non-native speaker to strengthen your English skills. I am a Professor of Commercial Law at Roma Tre University, a leading University in Rome.
My feedback on ACE (beta version) course is very positive. It is a very useful and time-saving tool. It is user-friendly and goes directly to the point.
It is different from any other course I had tried before because it addresses "English in practice" and is really conceived for lawyers.
The quizzes came before the related explanations in order to make the user aware of his/her level. Each explanation appears after the end of each section of quizzes and is immediately after each query. If you have little time you can read the short explanation that refers precisely to a certain query. If you have more time instead and the query involves a relatively broad language issue you can click on the link related to this issue and read a broader explanation. Where it is possible and useful, at the end of some of the sections or quizzes the user finds a link to another section or quiz to practice more deeply on a related relevant and specific language issue.
It is difficult to believe that a non-lawyer could prepare a course/test that is as focused on lawyers' language in practice as ACE is.
I tested ACE and I will use it again since it remains useful even after the first usage. As a matter of fact:
- ACE also faces language issues that a non-native speaker can usually solve with self-confidence only after several attempts (the fact that he/she can choose the right answer at the first attempt does not necessarily mean that he/she will able to do the same at the second attempt after some days or weeks);
- differently from other English tests or courses the exercises and queries are very different from each other and this makes it more difficult to choose the right answer from memory or automatically based on the previous queries;
- differently from other tests or courses the course is focused on common errors from non-native speakers and it is easy to understand that those errors were identified through a long term experience in the field by teaching and talking to non-native speaker lawyers and reading papers or paragraphs or sentences they wrote;
- if the user does not have much time, ACE can be used for a few minutes each time because the section is complete and useful independently from the others but is short enough to be fully used in a few minutes;
- the user does not get bored. Therefore he/she will not think and feel "I am doing it now for the first and last time in my life" or "Thank God it's finished". It is another difference between ACE and other English courses.

I have done the CONTRACTS and COMPANIES courses. I thought they were good and that they would be very useful for most young (and in fact not-so-young) lawyers who work a lot in English but aren’t native speakers.

They deal with many of the errors I have seen people make over the years and provide a useful introduction to aspects of English contract and companies law.

I am a Japanese Patent Attorney and work for a Law and Patent Office in Tokyo.
I have done the ACE Legal English – Legal Writing and Legal Drafting course.
I enjoyed and learnt a lot from the course. In particular, “the Golden Rule”, “KISS”, “Use relative (“which”) clauses” and “Use verbs not nouns” were useful to me.

It took more than 4 hours. In places the language was difficult for me, a non-lawyer. It may have taken a bit less time for a lawyer.

Alan is a great teacher! Thanks a lot! I can absolutely recommend English 4 Lawyers or German lawyers/students/referendars (in particular for those who are on the point of starting their career in an international law firm). Best wishes from Frankfurt!

Alan's quizzes are a clever idea using practical examples that do thoroughly test your knowledge of English and in so doing, help avoid what may seem simple, but could be expensive, errors. Very useful courses, very fairly priced and highly recommended. Even competent English speakers may find themselves pausing to consider their answer!
