As a former student, I felt very disappointed by the standard of education. Courses are not process oriented, the level of teaching is below par. I graduated from Brunel pursuing my Masters in Sciences for the academic year 2010-2011. I am still amazed Professor Hamed Al-Raweshidy is still on the payroll of the university. He taught us core Engineering module, and he totally had no clue of the subject. Then my class students complained to the HOD Dr. Nilavalan, he took vengeance by giving the final exam paper very tough. I paid the tuition fees from my hard earned labor, I sincerely regret joining this university. Also, Dr. Nilavalan who is still on the University Payroll also Head of the department was no good tutor, completely biased towards EU students. I would though sincerely thank Dr. Wamadeva and Dr. Nadarajah for their support in completing my Project Thesis. Their guidance and support was the only fruitful thing of my time in that university.

I honestly do not know where to start. During the COVID times, I decided to do 'another' PhD to fill the time, in a research topic that I absolutely loved, and chose Brunel's Electronic and Electrical Engineering department - proximity to where I lived was my main driver, and the ranking too. Towards the end of my third year, I suffered a heart attack, and was about to drop out due to ill health; I didn't even have enough time to communicate this to my supervisory team. As I was recovering, I got in touch with Prof. Maozhen Li, my supervisor, and with Vicky Maladeni at the PGR Office. To say the support was great is an understatement. I was reassured, and made to believe again that I could make it. It was hard, but I did - so much so, that I'm attending graduation in less than 12 hours from now, in the Winter Graduation, with all my children attending to see their dad walk that isle for the 4th time in his educational journey, and the first time in their lives. Much to the disappointment of all the negative feedback on this page and the classic "n times more" international students, I'm not only a home student, but a (very) mature one at that, soon pushing 60 - but one with a passion for learning that will not die, and Brunel is where I found "me", again. Not once have I had reason to interact with any faculty, administrative or support staff, has this experience been short of wonderful, and certainly in sharp contrast with many an academic institutions where I either studied, researched and/or taught.
So here's a great THANK YOU; a massive wish for the BEST, that is yet to come, lately culminating in Brunel joining the University of London community. With wishes for a great Christmas 2024, and a lovely and prosperous 2025 to come.

One of the worst experience in my life. It is almost impossible to prove that you are right due to slow bureaucracy and misleading technical guidance or lack of support. Even though you are right, nobody from the institution side admits their mistakes and incapabilities. They protect each other. A research project based on a facility does not exist, a supervisor tell lies and mislead the project... Lack of integrity... A terrible experience and simply corruption. I hope one day I will share this experience with some journalist... Unfortunately, I do not have money to hire a solicitor to sue them for being scammed. Do not trust this institution for research... High possibility to destroy your career.

As a (former) student at Brunel University, I would like to state that I felt so unsupported during my three years here. Having faced a combination of issues, which falls outside of academia, despite my extenuating circumstances being accepted and passed to the Board of Examiners, my request for a letter of acknowledgement (regarding the extenuating circumstances) was not addressed seriously, as I was simply told to ‘contact [my] personal tutor and ask if he’s prepared to write [me] a letter to say that [I] faced some challenging times whilst at Brunel.’ Unlike the department which deals with extenuating circumstances, my personal tutor did not actually know of my personal circumstances. I had once passed a module overall, but despite my evidence of extenuating circumstances – weather (snow) causing delays with the public transport, which prompted me to be late (as I commute 2 hrs) – being accepted, I was not allowed to sit the exam (in August), and the assessment was listed as a non-submission on my transcript. The reasoning for me not being allowed to sit the exam: I passed the module overall. The assessment I could not sit was worth 25% of the module.
Further to this, I have been made aware by fellow students that sexual misconduct on campus is not addressed properly & using a victim-centred approach.
I would also like to add that lecturers are not held to the same standards (for delivering their content) as they expect from students (in terms of participation and excellence).

It’s 0 degrees freezing and there’s no heating in any of the buildings! What are we paying all that money for if they can’t even keep the lecture rooms warm!

This "university" cares more about money than the lives, safety, or education of their students. This can be seen through the amount of international students brought in too due to the amount they're willing to pay (3x more). I know so many students who have experienced severe health problems but the uni did not accommodate them through these. As a result, they had suffered more due to negligence of the university within its unjust system. Worst of all, within these meetings, myself and others have been laughed at through our struggles. This is extremely unethical. You have no voice and they revert back to the same point if you appeal (without hearing anything you say).

Myself, and others (females) have experienced a number of unsafe situations, and security did not look further into these to prevent them from happening again. Drunk, aggressive men had somehow entered our all-female flats with different keys. This is outrageous.

Student accommodation has infestations and major plumbing issues. They won't fix either of these but will continue to charge students. There are more silverfish in Bishops Complex and Lancaster Complex has rats and mice. Furthermore, thousands worth of students' possessions have been stolen from their ground floor rooms. Faraday Complex has plumbing issues, your shower water will keep overflowing and the rooms on the ground and first floor tend to flood with urine and you-know-what. So avoid these at all costs. Unfortunately, I've seen this happen but the uni do not fix this system or reimburse finances.
If you're considering adequate on-campus living, Isambard Complex is the only option.

Expectations of students vs lecturers is unequal. We submit to all deadlines and adhere to all adjustments but the entire process of the uni is last-minute, feedback is returned much later than anticipated, etc.

This university has been going downhill over the last few years. I would not recommend for anyone to go to Brunel.
