Bishopthorpe Palace on the banks of the river ouse is the official residence of the archbishop of york. The grade one listed building dates back to 1242. A red brick wing was added in the 15th century and the impressive gatehouse in 1765. It is best viewed from the river on one of the boat trips from York.
